The walls were built from 270 to 275 AC, under the reign of the Roman Emperors Aurelian and Probus, to defend the city from possible barbarian invasions.

They originally ran for 19 km (12 mi) around the city of Rome. the circuit possessed 383 towers, 7,020 crenellations, 18 main gates, and 5 postern gates. Now there are 12.5 km (7.75 mi) left, in any case one of  the longest and best preserved city walls in the world.
